An outdated girl in a fur coat and 2 tennis sneakers, reclining on one elbow as if in a punt on a lake, stared at Alma in admiration. ‘My goodness,’ she shouted. ‘You’re a bonny woman. Will you examine that hair on her head? ’ Alma’s hair, rinsed to an strange color of strawberry blonde, used to be blowing in all instructions.
